Well, I have
a wall in my writing room filled with letters, certificates (NaNoWriMo,
etc..), word counts, calendars, goals, mind-maps and quotes that inspire
me. So I thought I'd share with you, some of my favourite quotes. I'll
add more as I can be bothered to. Some of these I haven't even put on my
wall yet! (They're on my to-do list.) Ernest Hemingway (7) "I love sleep. My life has the tendency to fall apart when I'm awake, you know?" "Man is not made for defeat." "All my life I've looked at words as though I were seeing them for the first time. " "Madame, all stories, if continued far enough, end in death, and he is no true-story teller who would keep that from you." "There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed." "The first draft of anything is shit." "When writing a novel a writer should create living people; people are not characters. A character is a caricature." Chinua Achebe (1) "When suffering knocks at your door and you say there is no seat for him, he tells you not to worry because he has brought his own stool." From the movie Finding Forrester (3) "Bolt the door, if you're coming in." "No thinking - that comes later. You must write your first draft with your heart. You rewrite with your head. The first key to writing is... to write, not to think!" "You know what the absolute best moment is? It's when you've finished your first draft and you read it by yourself. Before these assholes take something that they couldn't do in a lifetime and tear it down in a single day." Vladmir Nabokov (3) "A writer should have the precision of a poet and the imagination of a scientist." "The pages are still blank, but there is a miraculous feeling of the words being there, written in invisible ink and clamoring to become visible." "Turning one's novel into a movie script is rather like making a series of sketches for a painting that has long ago been finished and framed." Robert Bulwer-Lytton (6) "The pen is mightier than the sword." "A fool flatters himself, a wise man flatters the fool." "It is not by the gray of the hair that one knows the age of the heart." "Love thou the rose, yet leave it on its stem." "Master books, but do not let them master you. Read to live, not live to read." "The easiest person to deceive is one's self." Douglas Adams (3) "Flying is learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss." "I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by." "Life is wasted on the living." Jules Renard (1) "Writing is an occupation in which you have to keep proving your talent to those who have none." Mark Twain (2) "The difference between the right work and the almost right word is the difference between lightening and the lightening bug." "Use the right word, not it's second cousin." Ray Bradbury (1) "We are cups, constantly and quietly being filled. The trick is, knowing how to tip ourselves over and let the beautiful stuff out." Pablo Picasso (1) "Inspiration does exist, but it must find you working." John Baldwin (1) "If you get bogged down, just kill somebody." T.S Eliot (1) "Most editors are failed writers, but so are most writers." Sharon O'Brien (1) "Writing became such a process of discovery that I couldn't wait to get to work in the morning I wanted to know what I was going to say." Katherine Anna Porter (1) "If I didn't know the ending of a story, I wouldn't begin." Toni Morrison (1) "If there's a book you really want to read but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it." Henry Ward Beecher (1) "All words are pegs to hand ideas on." Elie Wiesel (1)/span> "All words are pegs to hand ideas on." Elie Wiesel (1) "Write only is you cannot live without writing. Write only what you alone can write." Raymond Chandler (1) "The faster I write the better my output. If I'm going slow I'm in trouble. It means I'm pushing the words instead of being pulled by them." |
